iPod nano

In line with recently circulating rumors of a taller design, Apple announced the 4th generation iPod nano.

Features as summarized by MacRumors:

* Thinnest iPod ever
* Enhanced user interface
* Accelerometer to detect tilt
* Shake iPod to shuffle
* Genius playlist built in
* Aluminum with curved glass
* Battery: 24 hours for music. 4 hours for video.
* $149 for 8GB (avail. today). $199 for 16GB (avail. next week).
* 9 Colors: silver, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, black

iPod touch

Jobs unveiled the 2nd generation iPod touch at today’s event. The new is thinner and sports a rounded, stainless steel backplate.

Features include:

* 2.1 firmware
* Built-in speaker and volume control rocker
* 36 hours battery for music, 6 hours for video
* “Genius” playlist
* Integrated Nike+iPod support

The new units maintain the storage capacities of the 1st generation units: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399.

iPod classic

The 80GB and 160GB iPod classics have been replaced with a new 120GB unit.

iPod shuffle

The iPod shuffle will henceforth be offered in the new colors of the nano line, with no other changes to speak of.

iTunes 8

As anticipated, Apple rolled out iTunes 8 today, featuring:

* Support for High Definition TV shows
* $1.99 for Standard Definition episodes
* $2.99 for High Definition episodes
* Genius playlists: automatically find similar songs in your collection
* Available today

iTunes 8 features a new graphical visualizer called “iTunes Visualizer” that is, as we reported, an evolved version of Magnetosphere. It looks better than ever.

Apple also reports that NBC has returned to the iTunes Store. Heroes and The Office will soon be available once again.

2.1 Firmware

Jobs also announced that the iPhone 2.1 firmware will be released on Friday. This much anciticpated update will bring the following enhancements:

* Significantly better battery life
* Fewer call drops
* Bug fixes
* Faster backups to iTunes
* No App crashes
